About This Item
London: Calder and Boyars. 1970. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Warmly inscribed by the author to the English poet, Lee Harwood. Original green cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the Jim Dine designed dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean throughout. Light spotting to the upper edge of the page block, and a few spots to the upper edge of the front free endpaper. In the lightly spotted dustwrapper. Not price-clipped (35s / £1.75 to the front flap). Inscribed by the author in black ink to the front free endpaper, "For Lee / with our / love / in his country, / Bob / London 7.18.70". The recipient is Lee Harwood (1939-2015), described by John Ashbery as "one of England's best poets and best kept secrets". 'The Finger', which collects Creeley's poems from the second half of the sixties, follows 'Poems 1950-1965' (1966). Both volumes were exclusive to the UK market. The volume is divided into three sections, 'The Hole', 'Pieces' and (nicely appropriate to this copy's inscription), 'In London'.
