Lerner 5. "MacTavish surveys art in Canada rather than "Canadian art". The importance of Indigenous art is acknowledged and a whole chapter is devoted to Tom Thompson and the then-controversial Group of Seven. Traces chronologically the careers of Paul Kane and Cornelius Krieghoff, the imitative art of the 19th century, and the foundation of the Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal Canadian Academy. A chapter is included on women artists
