San Francisco: The Book Club of California, 1929 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First edition. One of 400 copies printed for The Book Club of California by San Francisco printers, Johnck & Seeger. Signed by the author. Additionally, this copy is labeled Number "4, Printer's Copy." The front blank flyleaf bears a presentation inscription, signed by the printer, "To my dear friend Paula Norton - this fragment from my hands. John J. Johnck." Pp. [8], iii-vi, 8, [3]. Opening initials in blue. Vellum-backed blue boards, gilt lettered cover. Slight fading to edges of front cover, vellum spine a bit darkened, else a fine copy. This short piece was intended to form an introductory chapter to Browne's biography of the poet Heine, but was omitted from that book. The Argonaut Book Shop was founded in 1941 in the middle of the financial district of San Francisco. The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers\' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by.
