About This Item

Very rare, elaborately designed, trilingual summary of Polish film productions in the years 1963 and 1964, in two volumes (possibly all published?). Individual film studios are presented with short introductory texts, followed by a list of the productions with brief descriptions, divided into different sections.

For example, the documentary "Requiem dla 500 tysięcy" (Requiem for 500,000) about the Warsaw Ghetto, which consists exclusively of archive material, is listed. Leszek Hołdanowicz received an award for the film poster at the time. He was also responsible for the design of the two brochures. These are early works by the well-known graphic designer. Early on, he turned against the illustrative or "painterly" tendencies that prevailed in Polish poster art from the 1950s onwards. Not only in book and cover design, but also in the design of posters, he relied on a reduced, graphically disciplined formal language based on the simplified sign and often devoid of any illustration. Hołdanowicz also took a functionalist approach to typographic design and rejected the use of the handwriting fonts that were popular for posters at the time. From the 1970s onwards, he became increasingly involved with the use of computer graphics. (Cf. AKL LXXIV, 228)

As of March 2024, OCLC show three incomplete copies, all in Europe, with no holdings in North America.
