About This Item

New York: Rinehart & Company, [1948]., 1948. First edition. First edition. Previous owners label on rear pastedown sheet and paste residue to front free endpaper else very good in price-clipped dust jacket with moderate wear to the extremities. Jim Dancer had been arrested by George Cummings and hired to bring him in. An attempt to cross a flood swollen river on a ferry goes awry, ending in the death of Cummings and possible freedom for Dancer. When a stage finds him handcuffed to Cummings' body the next morning, he identifies the dead man as Dancer and himself as Cummings. In the town of Lanyard, Dancer rescues a young woman being manhandled by a drunken Texan, killing him in a gunfight. That little indiscretion causes him to end up as town Marshall before he learns that the young woman he rescued was the daughter of the man he'd shot down in Lawrence nine years before and the owner of the town was the dead man's brother.

Reviews

On Mar 13 2020, a reader said:
George Cummings came to the town of Lanyard as a private detective with a brilliant record--the man who claimed to have killed Jim Dancer, the most dangerous man in the west, a marshal with a record, a killer with a badge. But George Cummings had a secret--he was really Jim Dancer, and he saw this as his chance to start over with a respectable past. What he hadn't figured on was, someone with an old score to settle arrived in town....Frank Gruber has created an exceptional book with Fighting Man, as it is also the telling of the American west, of the challenges, and rewards available to anyone brave enough to challenge them. His work is fast paced, using short crisp sentences, few adjectives, and using multiple points of view making the book almost like watching a movie. That probably came from the fact Mr. Gruber wrote many screenplays for both the movies and television during his life time. This is a highly entertaining book.
