About This Item

London: Routledge, 1936. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. (London: George Routledge & Son Ltd 1936). First UK Edition. Publisher's blue boards with gilt spine lettering. 248 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&W photographs (some aerial), fold-out map at rear (all present). Boards really bright and clean. Foxing to the fore-edge which has crept into the text block in places. Overall the book itself is VG indeed. In the VERY RARE dust wrapper which is priced 10s 6d net to the inside flap (as called for). The D/W is a VG+ example slightly darkened to the spine and creased and lightly rubbed at the head. A nice copy. "This book consists of the reminiscences of an ordinary fighter pilot of the R.F.C. who had the privilege of serving with one of the leading Fighter Squadrons and who had the honour of being the friend of the supreme fighter of all the Air Forces, that indomitable and lovable patriot, 'Mick' Mannock, V.C., D.S.O., M.C.". ‘Fighter Pilot’ is a detailed and exciting account of squadron life in the latter years of the First World War, showing the true bravery and camaraderie of these early aviators and the effect that combat had on them. William MacLanachan, known as McScotch, was a flying ace of the First World War, credited with seven victories. He joined the Royal Flying Corps from the Army, being posted to No. 40 Squadron in the spring of 1917. His lucky mascot, a teddy bear called Scotch Jock, is displayed at the RAF Museum Cosford. A highly articulate account of the techniques, equipment, and psychology of the RAF during World War One. Photographs/scans available upon request.
