Born at Chateau Bellegrave, Pauillac [Medoc] France in 1915, van der Voort emigrated to the U. S. in 1941. He joined the U. S. Army in 1942 and, after being discharged, started in 1946, in San Francisco, a wine and spirit Importing and Distributing Company in association with Messrs. Peter and John Bercut, Bercut-Vandervoort & Co. .
