Buchanan Company" The author writes of sending his car across the Atlantic by ship, while he and his wife and their driver took another ship. He journals his automobile trip through France. The book includes photos of many of the hotels in which they stayed. CONDITION: Burgundy cloth covered boards show wear at top and bottom spine edges, with the very top edge of the cloth missing along the spine and a small split at the bottom spine edge. The tips of the front corners also show wear. The top corners are lightly bumped, and the cloth is worn through at the top front corner tip. Boards are clean but have some tiny lightened spots (from rubbing?) Gilt lettering on front board still has a lot of shine and grey border on front board is clear. Interior is unmarked and clean throughout. Binding is solid and without cracks.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.

Note that this edition has 176 pages, fewer than the later 1882 and other Houghton, Mifflin editions, which added two chapters and which have 226 pages. (All Houghton - whether Houghton Osgood or Houghton Mifflin - editions were issued in varying cover colors - red, green, brown - but all with the same blind stamped design. The 1878 1st editons I have seen have the additional gilt design along the top and lower front edges, as seen here.)

This edition is one of the earlier ones having more illustrations than the later editions. The preface is dated 1906 and a Publishers note on page 8 brings attention to various expedition leaders and publishers for the use of their illustrations. Frontispiece + 21 b/w illustrations + 2 maps all as called for in list of illustrations. Shelfware, rear cover stained. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
