"Ian Gibson's masterly biography shows us that Lorca's life was every bit as remarkable as his work. In addition to his other gifts, he was an excellent pianist, a gifted artist, a fine actor, and an acclaimed lecturer. Enormously charismatic, he became a celebrity in his later years, and had a large and varied circle of friends. Among those he knew will were Salvador Dalí, Luis Buñuel, and Pablo Neruda, as well as renowned actors, matadors, and musicians. His travels, which included stays in New York, Cuba, and Argentina, helped to spread his fame. His outspokenness, and his work with a republican theater troupe, made him a political symbol -- and a target.
Beneath his dazzling exterior, however, lay hidden sorrows. Throughout his lfie, Lorca was plagued by depressions. A homosexual in a highly intolerant society, he endured several unhappy loves, including a deep passion for his friend Dalí.Twenty years in the making, Ian Gibson's biography was written with full cooperation of the Lorca family and draws on much hitherto unavailable material, including letters, manuscripts, and literally hundreds of interviews. It is and should remain the life of the poet."
