Faded at extremities and worn in a couple spots, bumped along edges and corners, with a scratch and indentation on front board near bottom, and panels lightly rubbed. Binding is sound. Interior is unmarked. Upper page edges toned. Lacking dustjacket. 12mo, 5 x 7.5 inches. 8vo. Our photos depict actual book offered for sale. May 11, 1920) was an American realist novelist, literary critic, and playwright, nicknamed The Dean of American Letters. He was particularly known for his tenure as editor of The Atlantic Monthly, as well as for the novels The Rise of Silas Lapham and A Traveler from Altruria, and the Christmas story Christmas Every Day, which was adapted into a 1996 film of the same name. Noting the documentary and truthful value of Howells's work, Henry James wrote, The late 19th-century English novelist George Gissing [called] A Fearful Responsibility, .
