About This Item

Buenos Aires, Museo Publico de Buenos Aires, 1866-1867. In three parts. Folio (34.2 x 26.0 cm). Introduccion (Entrego segunda, 1867) pp. 87-120; Lista de los mamiferos fosiles del terreno diluviano (Entrego tercera, 1866) pp. 121-232, plates V-VIII; ([continued in:] Entrega cuarta, 1867) pp. 233-300, plates IX-XIV, for a total of 214 pp., and ten lithographed plates. Original uniform printed wrappers. A series of very rare papers intended to become Karl Burmeister's magnum opus, which, however, was never completed. Karl (or Carl) Hermann Konrad Burmeister (1807-1892) was a German - later Argentine - zoologist, herpetologist, mammalogist and entomologist. "He traveled to Brazil from 1850 to 1852 and Argentina from 1857 to 1860, returning to Germany with zoological collections. In 1861 he went to live in Argentina, founding the Institute at the Museo Nacional in Buenos Aires" (Wikipedia). Published in the museum's Anales, first volume, parts 2-4. It is a bit peculiar that part 3 is dated 1866, and 2, and 4 are dated 1867. The plates shows big extinct mammals. This seems to be the start. It is not known how much more was published. A part on Argentine whales is known too, as is a much altered, and never completed French edition (published from 1876 to 1886, and, according to Nissen, consisting of text and atlas parts on whales, seals and the skeletons of the famous extinct ground sloths. The latter part therefore dealing with the same groups as in this earlier work). Wrappers inscribed with the name and address of the French zoologist Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville (1799-1874), the last signed with de la part de l'auteur. Edges a bit frayed, wrappers partly detached (one rear wrapper lacking); contents, however, good. Very rare. Nissen ZBI, 760 (different, later edition). Neither in Cat. BM(NH) nor in Wood.
