About This Item

London: Macmillan and Co, 1923. Cloth. Very Good. 8.5" by 6". Hardy. A beautiful edition of Thomas Hardy's play, 'The Famous Tragedy of the Queen of Cornwall'. This one-act play by Hardy, is one of only two pieces of drama written by the author. Designed for 'mummers' the play was designed to be performed by amateur groups, rather than a large scale theatre production. Includes a facsimile in the author's hand, of the title page. Thomas Hardy was a prolific English novelist and poet. Openly critical of Victorian society, his often focused on the situation of those in the rural parts of Britain, in particular the South West. Predominantly a pet and novelist, Hardy only wrote two pieces of drama, one being 'The famous Tragedy of the Queen of Cornwall', the other 'The Dynasts' an epic drama of three parts. In full cloth binding, with gilt detailing. Externally smart. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and also to the joints and the extremities. Sunning to the spine. Slight spotting to the bottom edge. Offsetting to the front and rear endpapers and pastedown, with some spotting to the rear endpaper and pastedown. Facsimile included has some agetoing to the head, and some spotting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright, with the some spotting throughout. Previous owners notes throughout, in pencil. Very Good
