About This Item

Chicago/Ohio/New York: Leavitt and Allen Brothers, 1870. First Edition Later Printing . Hardcover. Fair-Good/No Jacket. One of a series of literary classics adapted for young readers by breaking up words into one syllable for easy pronunciation. This one contains 4 beloved fairy tales: "Aladdin, or, the Wonderful Lamp,'' "Beauty and the Beast'' "The Children in the Wood" (better known as "Hansel and Gretel"), & "Whittington and His Cat." In 207 pages, + a Frontispiece & 4 chromolithographed plates in full color (artist unattributed), one preceding each story. A vintage FIRST EDITION, later (1879) printing, this small (6" x 5") hardcover has deep blue publisher's cloth over boards with brilliant gilt lettering & design to front & spine. Condition is Fair-Good: external stains & scuffing & rubbing to extremities, down to underlying boards at corners. All the lovely vintage illustrations are bright & colorful, with modest tanning to margins. Both front & rear hinges are cracked, with long tear to front endpaper. Text block is fragile, with the stitched binding still intact, but very delicate. Many small spots & smudges. Our photos depict the Ex act book you will receive from us, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
