This is a scarce, very early Charles Dickens book that was published when he was only 25 years old. "PUBLIC LIFE OF MR. TULRUMBLE, ONCE MAYOR OF MUDFOG" by Boz ("Boz" was the pen name of Dickens). 1837; Carey, Lea and Blanchard; Philadelphia. The book contains "Other Tales and Sketches, from Bentley's Miscellany, and the Library of Fiction" including a story by James Fenimore (spelled "Fennimore" on the contents page) Cooper titled "An Evening of Visits." There are 11 stories in all - please see the photos for the complete list of contents. This is one of the first stories by Dickens published in book form in the United States.Condition:Worn corners (the tips of the boards are exposed); 1/2" cloth tears at the top edge of the spine, small cloth tears at the bottom edge. The front board bows at the center just a bit. There is a crack at the front hinge between the end papers. Lovely copy of a rare book on Indian flora by talented amateur female artist Lena Lowis
With 30 elegant botanicals by Lena Lowis, lithographed by David Blair, and printed by M. & N. Hanhart. Among the exotic flowers portrayed are poinsettia, flame lily, bougainvillea, hibiscus, clustervine, coralbush, Rangoon creeper, Nepal trumpet flower, white orchid tree, elephant creeper, oleander, Darwin pea, bottlebrush and Eastern prickly pear.
No publication date, but preface dated 1878.
Lena Lowis (1845-1919) was a talented writer and botanical illustrator. She was born Selina Caroline Shakespear in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India, the daughter of British Indian Army officer, Col. Sir Richmond Shakespear. She married Lt. Col. Ninian Lowis of the Bengal Staffs Corps and moved to England in 1868.
David Blair (1820-1899?), was a botanical artist and lithographer who also worked on Transactions of the Linnean Society (1875), Berthold Carl Seemann and James Britten's Journal of Botany, British and Foreign (1872-8), James Britten's European Ferns (1880), etc.
Faded green cloth binding with gilt title tooling to front board, fraying at edges and hinges, letter from Aunt Lizzie dated 1898 to front endpaper, interior fresh and bright with occasional faint spot to text and plates.

Illustrated with a full color frontispiece and 3 black and white plates. Hinges starting to crack, ends lightly worn. General tone with lightly soiled endpages. The dust jacket is missing a large portion from spine and back panel. The front panel is heavily creased. A clear, removable, protective cover has a computer generated title adhered to it. From the "Series for Young People" first published with this cover in 1918.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
