An Aggressive Federal Prosecutor Tells How American Justice Wrote the Closing Chapter on the Six Decades of a Corrupt Political Empire in Duval County. The April Fool's Day helicopter search for George parr, the aging Duke of Duval, was narrowed to a few of his favorite spots on the South Texas ranch he loved. Parr had become an official fugitive the previous afternoon, when he failed to show up in U.S. District Judge Owen Cox's courtroom in Corpus Christi. When the morning sun glinted off the windshield of the big Chrysler Imperial parked under a mesquite tree, the search was over. The Duke had chosen suicide over a prison term. Parr attained lasting notoriety in 1948 by stealing a United States Senate election for then Congressman Lyndon Johnson. "Box 13" became a synonym for election fraud. The author, now a practicing attorney in San Antonio, was the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas and served as prosecuting attorney in presenting evidence to the grand jury. This is the story of events that led to Parr's suicide and the collapse of the corrupt South Texas political empire that he and his father before him - each in turn known as the Duke of Duval - had ruled for more than six decades in Duval County. Clark, who later served as Associate Justice, Court of Appeals, Fourth District, quotes extensively from grand jury proceedings, which became public when they were turned over to defense counsel.. Signed by Author. 2nd Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
