About This Item

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1904 First edition, first issue, with two pages of ads at rear. Publisher's blue cloth, with tree branch and pinecones to front panel, front board lettered in black, spine lettered in gilt, and top edge gilt. Very good, with light toning to spine, light wear to spine ends and corners, gentle lean to spine, and very light soiling to some pages. Overall, a bright and handsome copy. BAL 11878. This short story collection features eight adventure stories set in the Yukon Territory: "A Relic of the Pliocene" "A Hyperborean Brew," "The Faith of Men," "Too Much Gold," "The One Thousand Dozen," "The Marriage of Lit-Lit," "Bâtard," and "The Story of Jees Uck." In 1897, London traveled to the Yukon to participate in the Klondike Gold Rush, an experience that inspired many of his novels and short stories. The story "Bâtard," first published in The Cosmopolitan in 1902, is about a hate-filled relationship between a wolfdog and his master, and was a notable predecessor to London's masterpieces The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906).. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.
