New York: Delacorte Press/ Seymour Lawrence, 1973. J.P. Donleavy and Seymour Lawrence first met in 1961, and had been corresponding regarding Donleavys work in progress A Fairy Tale of New York. Donleavy gave Lawrence The Ginger Man to publish, which, in association with Delacorte/Dell, came out in 1965 (the first complete and unexpurgated edition published in the U.S.) to great success. Lawrence built a remarkable list of important authors, including: Thomas Berger, Richard Brautigan, Kurt Vonnegut, William Styron, Jim Harrison, William Saroyan, Frank Conroy and several Nobel Laureates.
Synopsis
A Fairy Tale of New York is a novel by Irish American author J. P. Donleavy, published in 1973. The plot concerns Irish-American Cornelius Christian's return to New York after studying in Ireland. The novel was based around Donleavy's earlier work Fairy Tales of New York, a successful stage play published in 1961.
