Fabre's Book of Insects, Mrs. Rodolph Stawell; Retold from Alexander Teixeira De Matto's Translation. Published by Tudor Publishing Company, New York, 1936. Third printing. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. [ix], 271pp. Twelve tipped-in color plates with captioned tissue guards colour plates by E J Detmold; title page printed in red and black. Green cloth boards with gilt titles front board and spine. In very nice condition with inked name of former owner to free endpaper, light outer edge spotting, toning to frontis tissue guard, rubbing to board edges.
Contents: Sacred Beelte, Cicada, Praying Mantis, Glow-Worm, Mason-Was, Psyches, Spanish Copris, Grasshoppers, Wasps, Grub, Cricket, Sisyphus, Capricorn, Locusts, Anthrax Fly. Jean-Henri Casimir Fabre (1823-1915) was a French entomologist, teacher, physicist, chemist and botanist. He is best known for his study of insects, and is considered by many to be the father of modern entomology. He influenced the later writings of Charles Darwin, who called Fabre "an inimitable observer".
