The first edition.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and seventeen plates.Half-title is present.ESTC citation number T138559.Collated, complete.A lovely collection of fables by William Wilkie.Written in iambic tetrameter, the sixteen poetical fables in this volume are reminiscent of John Gay. The sixteenth fable in this volume, 'The Hare and the Partan', is written in Scottish midlothian dialect. Fables include 'The Young Lady and the Looking-Glass', 'The Kite and the Rooks', 'The Muse and the Shepherd', and 'The Grasshopper and the Glowworm'. Including 'A Dialogue Between the Author and Friend' to the rear. Wilkie was a minister of the Scottish Church of Scotland, and a Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews. In a full rebacked calf binding. Externally, generally smart. A little discolouration and minor marks to the boards. Light bumping and rubbing to the extremities. Evidence of former wear prior to rebacking to the joints and to the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some scattered spots. Very Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
