About This Item
Salisbury: Printed by J. Easton for T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies, 1796. Hardcover. Very good. The uncommon first printing of the William Coxe edition, with notes and the life of the author by the Rector of Bemerton. Dedicated to William, Duke of Cumberland, the third son of King George II, these moralizing tales are often satiric in tone and were originally composed to educate and amuse the six year old prince. A particular favorite is "The Elephant and the Bookseller" (Fable 10). 12mo: xii, 72, 249, [2] p. with engraved decorations throughout. In a later one-quarter brown calf over marbled paper binding, with gilt stamping and five raised bands. Light toning to the contents, with a period ink ownership signature to the top edge of the title page; otherwise very good.
