About This Item

New York: Random House, 1968. First edition. Near fine in near fine dust jacket.. First printing of this picture book that highlights all of the many things our eyes can do, as explained by Seuss's delightful rhymes - one of his rarer titles. THE EYE BOOK is part of Seuss's Bright-and-Early Books series, intended for the youngest readers. This series used a "deliberately limited" vocabulary, a restriction that required the talented writer to be particularly creative; Philip Nel compares Seuss's work on the series as "comparable to what Georges Perec does when he writes an entire novel without using the letter e" (29). This copy comes directly from the stock of Aleph-Bet Books, the firm of Seuss bibliographers Helen Younger and Marc Younger. 9'' x 6.5''. Original color pictorial boards. Original unclipped (195/195) color pictorial dust jacket with correct first printing price and material on flaps (ref. Younger 21). Illustrated in color. [16] leaves. Small ink ownership inscription to front flyleaf. Jacket with mild bumping to corners and spine ends, faint soil. Binding with a touch of edgewear. Clean and bright.
