Author "was a German anti-communist resistance fighter, historian, and author. He is best known for founding the Checkpoint Charlie Museum (Mauermuseum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie) in Berlin, which is dedicated to the history of the Berlin Wall and the stories of those who attempted to escape from East Germany to the West. Born in Germany, Hildebrandt was involved in resistance against the Nazi regime during World War II. After the war, he turned his attention to the division of Germany and the oppression of people under the communist regime in East Germany. In 1962, he opened the Checkpoint Charlie Museum near the famous crossing point in the Berlin Wall.
