About This Item
Albuquerque, NM: Sandia National Laboratories. Ephemera. Good. Format is approximately 9.5 inches by 12 inches. Two inside pockets. Folder has an illustration on the front and substantial text on the back. No text inside. Cover has wear and creasing. T he Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) is one of three National Nuclear Security Administration research and development laboratories. Their primary mission is to develop, engineer, and test the non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons. It is Sandia's mission to maintain the reliability and surety of nuclear weapon systems, conduct research and development in arms control and nonproliferation technologies, and investigate methods for the disposal of the hazardous nuclear waste. Sandia does a variety of research including computational biology, mathematics, materials science, alternative energy, MEMS, and cognitive science initiatives. Sandia is also home to the Z Machine. The Z Machine is the largest X-ray generator in the world and is designed to test materials in conditions of extreme temperature and pressure. SNL/NM consists of five technical areas (TA) and additional test areas. Each TA has its own distinctive operations. TA-I operations are dedicated primarily to the design, research, and development of weapon systems; limited production of weapon system components; and energy programs. Activities in TA-II include the decontamination, decommissioning, and remediation of facilities and landfills used in past activities. TA-III is adjacent to and south of TA-V. TA-III facilities include extensive design-test facilities such as rocket sled tracks, centrifuges and a radiant heat facility. TA-IV consists of several inertial-confinement fusion research and pulsed power research facilities, including the High Energy Radiation Megavolt Electron Source, the Z Facility, the Short Pulsed High Intensity Nanosecond X-Radiator Facility, and the Saturn Accelerator. TA-IV also hosts computer science and cognition research. TA-V contains two research reactor facilities, an intense gamma irradiation facility and the Hot Cell Facility.
