About This Item

London: G. Bell and Sons, 1963. 570 pp, 7 1/2" H, red cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Map endpapers, 60 b&w illustrations."Pepy's Diary is one of the world's great books. For general interest few Diaries can compare with it, while as a record of nature at work in man it is unique. Yet, because it is a formidable-looking book of over a million words, the majority of people hesitate to tackle it. It is with the idea of enabling everyone, old and young, to enjoy the human comedy it contains, without being detained by the wider interests of the Diary as a whole, that 'Everybody's Pepys' has been prepared. It is not a book of unconnected selections, but a condensation which, as a result of repeated and careful pruning of the complete copyright text, brings the story, with its main sidelights, within the compass of a single volume." There are two previous owner's names in ink on the half-title page, very light browning to the edges of the text block, several light stains on the bottom of the text block, light edge wear - mainly at the corners and at the top/bottom of the spine, some colour fading at the top/bottom edge of the spine with wrinkling also at the bottom, minor lean to the spine. Dust jacket has is price-clipped, has light browning - moderate on the spine, some edge wear and wrinkling along with very small chips and some small tears, a few tiny dents on the front hinge, now protected in a removable mylar sleeve.. Not Signed. 17th Impression.. Hard Cover. Good/Good. Illus. by Ernest H. Shepard. Maps by A.E. Taylor..
