About This Item

Wynberg, Sandton [Johannesburg, South Africa]: Zebra Press, 1997. 17 cm wide by 24 cm tall. Bright copy. Occasional margin notes dispute certain statements and/or amplify aspects of the text. Based on the nature/content of these notes, it appears the annotations were written by someone very familiar with this ascent, possibly a member of the expedition or a close associate of someone who was. "Wand's" is written in ink on half title page. Illustrated with maps and 16 pages of full-color photos. Appendices. Includes an account of the tragic events that led to the death of Bruce Herrod, the expedition's photographer. Herrod was one of 11 people to die on Everest in 1996, a climbing season of unusually bad weather. From the rear cover: "The full story of the South African climb has never been told, until now. EVEREST, FREE TO DECIDE is the fascinating and powerful account of the hardship, joy and tragedy of the expedition... With the dramatic detail and insight that can only come from the climbers themselves, we travel from base camp to the summit and down again in an unforgettable journey." Keywords: Mountaineering. Mountain Climbing.. First Edition. Trade Paperback. Very Good condition.. 303pp. .

About About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. Because most of our books are stored in protective boxes, rather than on shelves, they cannot be viewed as a whole. If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
