In addition to being trained as an historian, Morison was a sailor and served in the U. S. Navy during World War 2. He brings a sailor's knowledge and experience to all his books on voyages and discovery, "has made transatlantic voyages under sail, and coasted the eastern shores of the United States and Canada; and in preparation for this book (Northern Voyages), he flew at low altitude in a small plane from Maine to Labrador, around the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and along the North Carolina Outer Banks. These personal investigations have allowed him to identify almost every place mentioned by the discoverers." From the DJ for Southern Voyages: "Admiral Morison personally retraced the routes of the explorers he writes about, including every part of Magellan's voyage, which forms the core of the book." He had previously, in the 1930s, sailed the routes taken by Columbus in his four voyages in the cases where records survived to recreate them. Fits in medium flat-rate box.
