It contains several essays on the United States; ”La guerre civile aux États-Unis”, L’Amerique et la revolution Française”, L’esclavage aux États-Unis” etc., but also on religion; ”De la personnalité divine”, ”Le rationalisteme chrétien” etc. Édouard Laboulaye (1811-83) was a French jurist and politician, author and an anti-slavery activist. He was an admirer of the American constitution and wrote several important works on the United States, and was the one who originated the idea of a Frensh statue of freedom as a gift to the United States. In France Laboulaye opposed the rule of Napoleon III and after 1871 he was elected for the National assembly and was an active anti-monarchist. He was also chairman of the French Anti-Slavery Society and president of the ”Société d'économie politique”. Nils S. von Koch (1801-81) was an influential Swedish liberal jurist and politician, married to Francis Eliza Lewin from England. He was very engaged in the social questions of his time; education, penalty laws and prisons, voting rights etc.
