Dedicated to "the real little housewives whose gentle listening and thoughtful questioning enabled the writer to write this book," this is a series of lectures delivered by Ruskin, one of the 19th-century's most renowned writers & philosophers, to his students at the progressive school for girls at Winnington Hall in Cheshire, England. "On the surface a discourse on crystallography" designed to introduce girls to science, "it is [actually] a metaphorical exploration of social and political ideals'' (Wiki). 158 pp., patterned endpapers. Orig. printed in London in 1866, this is an early American edition from 1885. His hardcover 24mo has green cloth-covered boards stamped & lettered in gilt to front with an intricate red-brown design.
