1839. ROUX DE ROCHELLE. ETATS-UNIS D'AMERIQUE. Paris: Firmin Didot Freres, Editeurs, 1839. One of the series L'Univers; Histoire et description de tous les peuples. Later printing, but still early; the first edition was printed in 1837. 96 plates and a fold-out map. Octavo: [vi],400 pp., with text printed in double columns. Publisher's binding: black cloth, gilt-stamped title to spine, yellow coated endpapers, all edges speckled brown. Ink ownership of Robert C. Winthrop (see DAB, vol. X) on ffep. and half-title as well as ex-library, with only a bookplate at front pastedown and a small, embossed seal on t.p. and p. 21. Heavy paste-action to endpapers and occasional, light foxing throughout, else a crisp and very good plus copy. Roux de Rochelle served as French Minister to the United States and this work is a well known piece of Americana including material and plates on a variety of subjects: Native Americans, early American settlers, politics, etc. (Howes R475, Sabin 73516).
