About This Item
The essays are: "Against Confidence in Philosophy"; "Of Scepticism and Certainty"; "Modern Improvements of Knowledge"; "The Usefulness of Philosophy to Theology"; "The Agreement of Reason, and Religion"; "Against Sadducicism in the Matter of Witchcraft"; and "Anti-fanatical Religion and Free Philosophy. In a Continuation of the New Atlantis."
An unusual collection of essays in support of science and true belief of witches and witchcraft. Joseph Glanvill (1636-1680) was a member of the clergy of the Anglican church notorious for his attempts to prove the existence of the supernatural using empirical methods. Puritan clergyman, Cotton Mather, used Glanvill's writings on Sadducicism as evidence for the Salem Witch Trials.
