About This Item

New York: William Sloane Assoc., 1946. First Printing Stated . Hard Back. Very Good/No Jacket. 7" x 10. 159 pages. Gray cloth with red lettering. Very clean tight book with an ever so small spine cock. No marks or stamps. Frontispiece has photo of 1944 sculpture. After Ernie Pyle was killed one of the many telegrams that came to his widow was signed simply A Soldier's Wife: and it said I knew him not, but I loved him. A great many people felt that way and there also many who both knew and loved him. In preparation for a book of Ernie's life hundreds of photographs of him came to light. Far too numerous to be used in the book yet so interesting in scope and variety it seemed wrong to leave them in their obscure resting places. Libraries, government files, wallets of friends on on their walls and in shuttered shoeboxes of half-forgotten mementos. Hence---for those friends who knew Ernie, and for those who knew him not this album, with a brief text to bridge the gaps in the story as the pictdures tell it. Contents: Early Days, Roving Reporter, England Africa Sicily Italy, Normandy and a Respite and The Last Mission. Filled with black and white photos. Two to four or five on every page.
