About This Item

London: W Pickering; C Tilt et al, 1835. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 6". None. The first edition of this historical look at Warwickshire. In the publisher's original cloth binding. To this work, Thomas Sharp explores the topography and natural history of this English county. With the prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Prior owner's inscription to the title page, 'Evelyn Priesley/Prinley' Bookseller's label to the front pastedown, John Merridew. Thomas Sharp was an antiquary from Coventry. He was the son of the hatter Thomas Sharp, whose shop has been depicted with the 'Peeping Tom' character in the window in an engraving after Thomas Rowlandson produced to commemorate Lady Godiva's ride through the city. 'Peeping Tom' was first recorded in the Coventry city accounts in 1773 and the Sharps had a reconstruction of the Peeping Tom in their house as their shop was known to be the residence of this historical individual. Sharp penned many topographial works relating to Warwickshire. This work is arranged in an alphabetical order and looks at various parishes and towns in the county. This includes Aston Cantlow, Bishops Itchington, Claverdon, Compton Murdack, Marton and more. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with fading to the boards and to the spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of spine. Several spots to boards. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Prior owner's name to the title page. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are generally bright. Prior owner's occasional notations to the margins. They have formed a single strike-through to several sentences, but the text can still be seen. Occasional light spots to pages. Very Good
