About This Item

Philadelphia: B. & J. Johnson, 1801. 1801 Hardcover. [English, Composition, Prose, and Poetry] "Sequel to The English Reader or, Elegant Selections in Prose and Poetry; Defigned [Designed] To Improve The Highest Class Of Learners In Reading; To Establish A Taste For Just and Accurate Composition; And To Promote The Interests Of Piety And Virtue." [NOT A FACSIMILE OR RECENT REPRINT. THIS IS THE 1801 EDITION.] Hardcover, 388 numbered pages. Three gilt horizontal lines on spine. No title on binding (possibly bound that way, since some antiquarian books were purchased without binding and customers found their own binders and selected their own binding based on their budgets). Heavily worn binding (chips, bumps, about 1¾-inch tears to joints, rubbed, some scrapes, shelf wear, corners showing). Covers bowed (lifting from textblock), especially top cover. Old provenance writing on first endpaper, first blank, and rear blank. Endpapers worn and torn. Scattered damp stains/foxing/age toning throughout. Tears, creases to several pages, but most pages readable. Nevertheless, binding still tight. Overall Fair to Less than Fair condition. Book written "to improve the highest class of learners in reading; to establish a taste for just and accurate composition, and to promote the interests of piety and virtue." An antiquarian book -- historical and educational. Scarce and collectible. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical book dealer in business since 1991. We describe the condition of our books thoroughly and honestly, so you'll know exactly what you will be receiving when you order. We ship promptly.. Hard Cover. Fair.

About R. Siedlecki Vintage Books

We are a well-established, well-respected dealer that is professional, honest, and ethical in our business dealings. We tend to describe each book in a reserved, conservative manner, rather than oversell a book or sidestep the responsibility of addressing its flaws. Book club editions and library books along with books without dustjackets (if they came with dustjackets) are pointed out in our descriptions. We describe our books in detail, pointing out the precise condition of each book based on our opinion. It's your assurance that the book we describe is as close as possible to the book you’ll receive. In business since 1991, we typically have five-star ratings on major web sites.
