About This Item
London: Albert Schloss, 1837. Landon, Letitia. 64pp. "Poetically illustrated" by L.E.L. (Letitia Landon), with portraits of Landon, Queen Victoria, King William IV, Sir Walter Scott, Giulia Grisi, and Mozart. Tinier and more finely printed than its peers in England or on the Continent, the English Bijou received rave reviews from the contemporary press. Spielmann described it as "a miracle of fine and delicate engraving, done consistently and beautifully to an almost unbelievably tiny scale." Trace exterior soiling, else near fine in white morocco sporting intricate giltwork and red leather onlays, with green morocco spine. A.e.g. The matching slipcase is likewise white morocco with a red onlay and gilt decoration. (Spielmann 448; Bondy pp.42, 165; Bromer/Edison, pp. 94-97; Welsh 2660). (3/4 by 9/16 inches; 20x15mm).
