John Russell Smith,, 1845. 8vo., First Edition thus, on laid paper, with a fine engraved portrait frontispiece and 17 fine engraved portraits; original brown pebble-grain cloth, gilt back, uncut, primrose endpapers, very short split in upper joint (but binding entirely sound), a remarkably well-preserved, crisp, clean copy. THIS COPY WAS PRESENTED BY EDMUND BLUNDEN TO HIS ALMA MATER CHRIST'S HOSPITAL AND BEARS AN APPROPRIATE PRESENTATION BOOKPLATE ON FRONT PASTE-DOWN AND SMALL BLIND STAMP ON TITLE. The copy is not however signed or inscribed by Blunden. An invaluable and much-needed reissue, printed by Henry Richardson and with fine plates by Wenceslaus Hollar, of the original Portsmouth edition of 1647. This edition is scarce in its own right. See Davies, 1153ff.
