Ever since reading "The Damned Engineers"by Janice Holt Giles---plus her other WWIIwork---some 35 years ago and having a life-long interest in the Battle of the Bulge, I have always been intensely interested in the291st Engineer Combat Battalion. Both as regards what the battalion accom-plished as well as its officers and men.Now we have the two works by Colonel DavidE. Pergrin: First Across the Rhine (1996)and Engineering the Victory (2000).As regards the latter, I have the work tobe factually quite impressive; both in scopeas well as in detail. Highly readable---despite an occasional proof-reading problem---and highly recommended for anyone to wants to gain further insight into the how and why Hitler'sfinal offensive in Europe was blunted bya relatively small number of AmericanG.I.s.
