Tokyo: Nohgakushoin Co., October 5, 1920. First Edition. Original Cloth. Very good. The first volume from an original set of four, published between 1920 and 1934. Lrge 4to. (39cm x 27cm) Decorated cloth over boards in a pattern of foliage, and a small stream, with silk binding ties to spine. End papers in a cross hatch design on washi paper. With numerous halftone collotypes or photogravures. [2], + 1 coloured reproduction, followed by b&w images: 33 pages with two masks per page, 5 pages with four masks and one page with one mask. Images show high reproduction values, with excellent contrast and detail. A fabulous overview of the Noh mask and hard to obtain now. Each photo is accompanied by a detailed text in Japanese to facing page, which also serves as a tissue guard. A small damp stain to base of spine which bleeds on to board edges by a few cms, slight wear to edges of boards, otherwise a fine copy. A later box set facsimile of the series was issued in 1978. A scarce item, WorldCat lists no copies, nor does LibraryHub in the UK.

The Sakuteiki, or "Records of Garden Making," was written nearly 1000 years ago, making it the oldest work on Japanese gardening; in fact, the oldest book on gardening in the world! In this edition of the Sakuteiki, the authors provide both an English-language translation of this classic work; and an introduction to the cultural and historical context that led to the development of Japanese gardening. A Japanese court noble wrote the Sakuteiki during the Heian period (794-1184). During this critical era in Japanese history cultural influences on poetry, clothing-and gardening-that had been imported from China and Korea over the previous centuries were reexamined and reinterpreted into their unique Japanese forms. The Sakuteiki contains the first systematic record of this new… Read More

From flyleaf: Between the years 1814 and 1878 there was published in Japan a series of woodblock printed volumes entitled Hokusai Manga, or Hokusai's Sketches from Life, which was destined to be one of the most popular art publications ever issued anywhere in the world. With its rich tapestry of life as it was lived in the boisterous Tokyo of the day and its magical evocation of the beauties of the Japanese countryside, it was an immediate best-seller in Japan, and then, upon the West's discovery of Japanese art, went on to win the hearts of people everywhere. The Tokaido -- the name of this highway today epitomizes a golden age of Japan's past. This "Eastern Sea Road", which connected the emperor's capital in Kyoto and the seat of the shogun's administration in Edo (now Tokyo) was heavily traveled in all seasons; the numerous prints and guidebooks about the Tokaido represent the time of prosperity and peace when even the average citizen could undertake the adventure of travel along this highway. It was Hiroshige who immortalized the Tokaido. In the famous prints of the fifty-three stages reproduced in this book, this master artist of the ukiyo-e print captured the beauty, romance, adventure, mystery, and joy - all the myriad and glowing facets of the people and places, in all seasons and times of day, of the Tokaido highway. Hiroshige's… Read More
