London: Victor Gollancz LTD, 1984. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good+. 8vo. [10], 3-278, [2] pp. Black cloth with gold lettering on the spine. Illustrated by a full-page map. In the first state dust jacket (FIRSTS, October 2010, 30). A sharp copy of Ballard's harrowing novel based on his experiences growing up during the Japanese occupation of China in the second world war. The basis for the Steven Spielberg film. A contemporary name on the front pastedown and the usual toning to the pageblock; jacket is price-clipped with a faint wrinkle to its bottom edge.
Synopsis
Empire of the Sun is a 1984 novel by J. G. Ballard which was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Like Ballard's earlier short story, "The Dead Time" (published in the anthology Myths of the Near Future), it is essentially fiction but draws extensively on Ballard's experiences in World War II. Ballard later wrote a sequel, entitled The Kindness of Women.
