About This Item
Stroud, Gloucester: Alan Sutton Publishing, 1992. 1st ed.. Hardback octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), light foxing reverse side jacket, light foxing edges, pages slightly toned, few tiny foxed spots endpapers. 188 pp. Peter Wilson Coldham reveals a largely untold until now. This groundbreaking study shows that the labour used for the American colonies was gained by using English prisons, workhouses, brothels, and houses of correction - as felons, rogues and social outcasts were transported - to work in the tobacco-growing colonies of Virginia and Maryland. The story is supported by a large amount of documentary evidence and first-hand reports. This story will challenge common perceptions and attitudes about the peopling of the American colonies.
