About This Item
London: Hutchinson & Co., 1935. Good. n.d. [1935] Reprint. 8vo. Grey boards, lettered in blue. Spine cocked, shabby boards, foxed with extremities bumped. Foxing to title page and preface, pencil notes to rear fep, else, clean. A good reading copy of Clarke's biography of Barrett Browning. Isabel Constance Clarke (1869-1951) was a prolific Catholic novelist and biographer, whose other literary subjects included the Bront sisters. Originally published in 1929, Clarke's biography of EBB came on the heels of two 'admirable' accounts of the poet's life, and begged forgiveness for any repetition by observing hers was the first 'narrative-biography,' while her residency in Italy helped her trace EBB's own time there (Preface).
