About This Item
Paris: Chez Sebast. Mabre-Cramoisy, Imprimeur du Roy, rue S. Jacques aux Cicognes, 1674. Second edition, 12mo, [24], 239, [1] pp., 2 folding plates, numerous illustrations in the text. Three works in one, some light dampstaining on the lower outer corners of a few leaves towards the end, later full calf, morocco, raised bands, spine label letter in gilt, a very nice copy. "A Jesuit, Pardies deserves a place in the history of physics for having intervened in the debate on the ideas of Newton and Huygens at certain decisive moments. His work, which is not extensive, is characteristic of a traditional period..... Although Pardies did not have the time to devote the full measure of his abilities to science, he was undoubtedly one of those vigorous intellects that science always needs.... His notions, as bold as they were näive, purported to demonstrate the spirituality of the soul by virtue of its capacity to understand the infinite through the 'clear and distinct ideas' of certain geometric arguments." - DSB.
