About This Item

Cambridge: The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1967. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. 7.5" by 10.5". Edward Lear. A first edition copy of Hofer's study of Edward Lear as an accomplished landscape draughtsman, with lovely colour plates. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Edward Lear, best known for his nonsense poem 'The Owl and the Pussycat', was also a fine artist, producing thousands of sketches and paintings. He is now recognised as one of the best topographical draughtsmen of his day. In this illuminating work, Hofer provides a biographical sketch of Lear and an appraisal of his work, alongside many lovely plates. In publisher's original cloth binding, with original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is very bright and smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Dust wrapper is smart but somewhat sunned. Fine
