Woodcut frontispiece portrait of Beale, engraved and lithographed plates in text. Beale was a naval officer, military general, explorer, frontiersman, Indian affairs superintendent, California rancher, diplomat, and friend of Kit Carson, Buffalo Bill Cody and Ulysses S. Grant.
