Black and white photographic frontispiece, of the author resting among jungle trees, with tissue guard in situ – which is creased and has blotted some black ink from inscription on title page. There are another 5 black-and-white photographs within the text. Green coloured cloth covered boards with gilt illustration and titles to the backstrip. The story of the author living in British Guiana in the 1920s and of the natural world which surrounded him. Softening, rubbing and fraying to the head and to the heel of the backstrip and to the book corners. Underlying board is visible to the lower book corners. Rubbing, with fraying, along the backstrip edges and a little to the front edges. Rubbing, marks and flecking to the book panels. Sunning to the backstrip. Browning to the textblock edges and to the pages. Blind stamped original bookseller's stamp to the top edge of the tree front end paper along with previous owners name. Another owner's name to the top right-hand corner of the title page. the illustration between pages 92 and 93 – that of queen and worker of the leaf-cutting ants, has become detached from the textblock.
