The story "An Easy Wheel" was first published in Wayland's Monthly in 1900. Publisher's brown paper wrappers with portrait of the author. . 5 x 8 in. . Some creasing and dustsoiling to wrappers. Two faint contemporary pencil ownership signatures (Bessie Dashnia?) to back cover. Clean throughout. A very good copy of a scarce work. Gertrude Breslau Hunt (1869 – 1952) was a suffragist, socialist organizer, and one of the leading writers for the Socialist Party of America. She was writing for socialist publications by 1902 and rose to prominence as a national leader in the Socialist Party by 1907, even serving as a delegate from Pennsylvania at the 1912 Convention of the Socialist Party of America. Hunt was also instrumental in freeing Fred Merrick, editor of the leftist magazine Justice, after he was jailed for libel in the Western Penitentiary in Pennsylvania. Hunt was able to document and reveal the brutal treatment of prisoners in the penitentiary, which resulted in Merrick's release. In the last two decades of her life, Hunt joined the Democratic party and became the state Democratic vice-chairman for Pennsylvania. She continued to participate in political organizing into her seventies and gave a speech alongside Senator Joseph F. Guffey at a Pennsylvania Democratic rally in 1940.

About Michael R. Thompson, Booksellers, ABAA/ILAB

Our office is located in Los Angeles on West Third Street, between the Beverly Center and Farmer's Market. Though we gave up an open shop after more than thirty years, we welcome serious customers and dealers. We are normally open from 10 to 6 Monday through Saturday. Since some of our less expensive books are located in a temperature-controlled storage area offsite, you may want to call ahead of time to insure that the book you want to see will be available. We feature a stock strong in literature, history, Western philosophy, women's studies, education, history of science and fine printing and artists' books. We are members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. We have books from the 15th to the 20th century in all prices ranges. We do appraisals for income tax and insurance purposes. We purchase individual books and libraries. Proprietor: Carol Sandberg
