About This Item

UK,8vo wraps,Uncorrected Book Proof. [Publication date October,1994 (provisional). Simultaneously published by VINTAGE as trade paperback. Often of limited availability, the text of a forthcoming book,is printed and bound in softcovers for use by the author, editors, proofreaders and some favoured reviewers. For undecorated printed wraps, with minimal publication data imprinted - the produced/released number of copies would almost certainly be less than 500,and most probably would tend to be around 200 copies. For glossy pictorial illustrated wrappers, produced numbers are often higher than 200,but either have a scarcity to them.Often errors or earlier versions of text appear in these proofs.Versions where the text has changed considerably are obviously considered more desirable by their nature.] NMINT - unread.Wrapped+protected and stored from day of distribution,so NO owner iscrptn,NO reading creases to spine or pages' corners - unread, other than my own collation.
Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,wrap-around matt white background with a b/w horizontally bisected rectangular panels with capitalised white-lettered title to black half and author's capitalised,black-lettered name to white half to front and rear covers; front cover with capitalised,black-lettered JONATHAN CAPE UNCORRECTED BOOK PROOF legend to lower edge.A flat, reading crease-free spine/backstrip with
similar coloured+lettered title+author as front's and publisher's b/w lettered+illustrated colophon to foot of same, rear cover with black-lettered synopsis and author's potted biography and publisher's information of book's size, provisional price and publication date, and ISBN.
Negligible shelf-wear to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present.Top+fore-edges bexceptionally bright and white, clean without blemish,ageing/toning or any foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - virtually pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, unread other than my own collation.UK,8vo wraps,Uncorrected Book Proof,5-216pp [paginated] includes 3 sections: EAST,WEST and EAST,WEST containing 9 short stories, each with a varying number of chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a dedication,a Contwents list/table,individual section separator pages and individual story separator pages too, plus an Acknowledgements separator page towards the rear.
Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 30-year-old age and nature, i.e an ephemeral paperback Proof copy. It really is an exceptional, exemplary example for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of detracting faults usually encountered with decades old paperback proofs.
In his first collection of short stories, Rushdie looks at his two worlds: East and West - their intimacy and distance, their shared history and the misunderstandings - comic and tragic - that separate and bind them through these nine stories.Six of the stories had been previously published elsewhere, but 'The Harmony of Spheres','Checkov and Zulu' and 'The Courtier'
have not been published before.
