About This Item
London: Ward, Lock & Co.; (no date). Hardcover. Early reprint circa 1880's, very good in decorated cloth lacking a dust jacket. The mustard colored cloth is worn along the top edges of the boards, and has a tiny chip at the top of the spine. The spine has the title in gilt, and drawing of Jules Verne in blue and black taking up most of the bottom half of the spine. The front board has an illustration, again in blue and black, of a bullet-shaped capsule taking off with stars and clouds (?) in the background. Half title page is very browned, but the rest of the pages are clean and have hardly any toning. 132 pages plus 12 pages of ads for the publisher's different series of books.
Synopsis
From the Earth to the Moon is a humorous science fantasy novel by Jules Verne and is one of the earliest entries in that genre. It tells the story of the president of a post-American Civil War gun club in Baltimore, his rival, a Philadelphia maker of armor, and a Frenchman, who build an enormous sky-facing Columbiad space gun and launch themselves in a projectile/spaceship from it to a Moon landing.
