About This Item

(Flagstaff, Arizona; 1976)): Northland Press. First Edition. Octavo. Frontispiece, 135 pages. Signed by both authors. Yuma is known as a hot desert town at the junction of the Gila and Colorado Rivers, which is also the conjunction of Arizona, California, and Mexico. As can be imagined, it had a lurid frontier history, with Indians, soldiers, missionaries, boundary surveyors, gold-seekers, river rats and, finally, those who were willing to settle were small shops and the ferryboat and steamboat operators who saw it only as a strong economic activity for people who would pass through not settle down there. The marvelous black-white photographs, with accompanying pungent commentary, are rich in detail of horse-drawn conveyances and contraptions, paddle-wheel steamboats, locomotives, domestic adobe and the early shops including the hotel which had a huge sign: Free Board on any day the sun doesn't shine. A fine copy in very good dust jacket with one small edge tear to rear panel, some light rubbing along the edges and front panel.
