1969. WILBUR, Lillian Lauler. THE EARLY SCHOOLS OF FREEHOLD, NJ AND VICINITY 1667-1928. [Asbury Park, NJ: Schuyler Press, 1969]. 8vo., blue cloth, stamped in gilt; 124 pages. First Edition. A scarce book! Signed by Wilbur on the copyright page & dated by her "July 4, 1969." Also with the signature of former University of Rhode Island President Carl R. Woodward on the title page & his personal "Myrtlewood" bookplate on the front pastedown. Woodward was born in Tennant, NJ and graduated from Freehold High School. He taught locally in a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from Rutgers University in 1914, then teaching at Madison High School. He eventually joined the Rutgers staff, becoming Secretary of the university. He later became President of Rhode Island College, which became the University of Rhode Island under his tenure. Myrtlewood was his estate in Kingston, RI. A few annotations in the text & with a newspaper clipping about the publication of this book tipped to the rear endpapers- all presumably by Woodward. A nice association copy with New Jersey and Freehold ties. Near fine (covers bright; contents clean & tight). $125.00.
