About This Item

Sacramento: Sacramento Book Collectors Club, 1973 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First edition. One of 400 copies printed by Andrew Hoyem. Translated by Louis C. Butscher. Edited with an Introduction by John A. Hussey. Quarto. 79pp. Frontis portrait, 2 plates. Yellow patterned cloth, brown cloth backstrip, paper spine label. A very fine copy. A translation of a previously unpublished manuscript of Prince Paul's journal of his journey to California in 1850 to experience, at first hand, the excitement of the Gold Rush. "Prince Paul tells how he met the 'King of California,' John Sutter. His narrative includes descriptions of Sacramento City; a Fourth of July celebration; visits to Sutter's Hock Farm; the towns of Elisa, Marysville, and Yuba City; the gold fields; and 'Hock' Indians. The Prince also compiled a list of Hok and Kosumé languages" (Kurutz). [Kurutz: 486; Rocq: 6802]..
